New Comics April 30, 2008

Ok, Countdown is finally over and for me I feel like I want my year Teen Titans Year One #4back. DC raised the price of the book and gave us less pay off. At least in 52 we got a punch line, even if it was a giant bug eating the multiverse. Well I think DC realized that the screwed up with Countdown and tried to make amends with Final Crisis. DC has been getting their but kick by Marvel in sales for the past and after reading DC Universe Zero they are not holding back and they are pulling out all the stops. This book gives us a preview of six story arcs that tie in with Final Crisis. I don’t want to give anything away, but the last page of the book gives me hope of a hero’s great return.

I would like to say I am enjoying Teen Titans Year One. It is a six issue mini series that is updating the origin of the original Teen Titans. Maybe I will always be an awkward teenager at heart but reading this book reminds me of when I was in high school with my buddies. The artwork is sort of anime and cartoonish but it fits the books. Besides Robin being depressed that Batman won’t let him go out and play the book is a quick, light hearted read.

Iron Fist where have you gone. Ed Brubaker is a great writer but he keeps writing these six and seven issue story arcs. Does he not remember we read comic books because we have a short attention span (or at least I do)? The 7 Capital Cities of Heaven storyline took for ever. I liked the over-sized last issued of the story and I like the direction the book is heading in but we need a couple short story arcs so that new readers can hope on and start enjoying the good things that Iron Fist has to offers.

Just a friendly reminder that FREE COMIC BOOK DAY is this Saturday, come celebrate the comic book industry with us and try some new books for free.

Free Comic Book Day

A FREE DAY OF FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY Free Comic Book Day
Worldwide Free Comic Book Day Comes to Chicago with Comics for All Ages!

The Comic Vault in Chicago is one of thousands of comic book shops around the world celebrating the comic book art form on Saturday, May 3rd. On Free Comic Book Day, over two million comic books will be given away by participating stores, introducing as many people as possible to the wonders of comic books!

“The Comic Vault is more than a store, it is a community. Free Comic Book day is one way to give back and involve the community,” said Matthew Sardo, owner of the Comic Vault

Now in its seventh year, Free Comic Book Day has proven to be a smashing success, spreading the word that comics are terrific reading. “Even if you have never picked up a comic book, stop into the Comic Vault, because you never know what you will end up finding.”

“We at the Comic Vault want to spread the word that comics are alive and well in 2008,” Sardo continued. “Comic books and graphic novels are more main stream now then ever before.” Comic Books have propelled to the front ranks of pop culture, many being adapted into movies. Ironman hits the big screen on May 2nd, the day before Free Comic Book Day. “The first weekend of May is going to be a big day in the comic book world.”

What will the Comic Vault be doing in addition to giving away comics:

Jim Terry creator and artist of Lie Down Low will be at the store from 1pm to 4pm.

All Back-Issues are $1
All statues, t-shirts and Variant covers are 50% off

Spring is in the air; trees are budding, people are enjoying the lake and Marvel & DC want you to spend Transformers Spotlight Grimlockyour money on big huge comic book cross-overs. Marvel has already started with Secret Invasion and DC will follow up with Final Crisis. Marvel also has Avenger/Invaders and DC has Batman RIP. Joss Whedon might even finish Astonishing X-Men and Runaways by the end of summer, but don’t get your hopes up.

On the Secret Invasion front this week we have Mighty Avengers #12 and Ms. Marvel #26. I am guessing there will be some green aliens involved and Ms. Marvel will question herself again and Nick Fury will make his return. What happens next is up to you.

DC is moving along with the last issues of Countdown to Final Crisis and Death of New Gods. I thought long and hard and tried to find something good to say about Countdown, the only thing I could come up with is DC Universe Zero comes out next week written by Geoff John and Grant Morrison. This weeks Countdown Superman Batman #47was like watching a very cheap Sci-Fi film. When Dona Troy says, “Who Monitors the Monitors,” I asked myself where all the original ideas have gone.

New Comics April 16, 2008

Since we are now on Skrull watch, this is the second week that Marvel is letting us down with not much Captain Marvel #5too follow-up Secret Invasion #1.  Last week we had nothing, at least this week we get Captain Marvel #5 (of 5) but the final part of the Captain Marvel story will finish up in a one-shot, Secret Invasion: Who do you trust?

I think Annihilation Conquest might be tied into the Secret Invasion but I am not positive. We will find out when the books arrive in a few hours.

Countdown to Final Crisis has two more issues to save the series and I personally don’t think that DC is going to pull it off. If Countdown does not WOW! some readers this will definitely be “bad new bears” for the next DC weekly series.

If anyone was worried that they were going to change the formula in Incredible Hercules, I am happy to say they are staying with the status quo. Hercules is still drink beer and arguing with family members, this time with his sister Athena. Ares Superman #675is a little busy since Herc made him eat a missile.

Superman #675 has a beautiful Alex Ross cover to celebrate the milestone.
It’s an oversized spectacular blowout action anniversary issue, as Kurt Busiek, gearing up for his insanely huge next project, brings his Superman run to a close! A three-way battle between Superman, Paragon and the forces of Daxam! The Earth-shattering threat of the all-new Galactic Golem! –Diamond Previews
With that being said the cover is still really cool. I think DC really needs to rethink what they are doing with Superman. If you have looked at how Marvel and DC have revamped dead or boring characters, they do in by focusing on the main character and supporting characters and making you care about them. I know this is crazy talk, but if they killed Lois or Jimmy and it was Superman’s fault people would care. That is what made the second crisis compelling. Earth-Two Superman was trying to save Lois and when she died he snapped Countdown to Final Crisis 2just like a regular person would. But it was about the redemption of the character that is important. In the end he sacrifices him self to save others.

This and That #5 Lightsaber battle that everyone should see!

I know I am way behind on this, but if there is one person out there that has not seen this “jedi battle” then I have done my job educating the universe. This video proves that the United States still has some of the greatest minds and talent. Now we just have to focus that talent to save the world.

New Comics April 9, 2008

I would like to thank writer Zeb Wells and artist Chris Bachalo for giving the fans a long over do story Amazing Spider-Man #556in Amazing Spider-Man. I know for the past couple months I have been on my soap box talking about how bad Marvel and Mister Joey Quesada have botched up the franchise title. I guess when the bar has been set as low as it has, if you give me something good I think it is amazing. (Sorry about the pun) I have always been an art guy; I grew up in the Todd Mcfarlane era of Amazing Spider-Man. So I have been spoiled. In issue 556 Bachalo has a few great splash pages of Spider-Man versus “a Big Ass” monster. The story takes place in a blizzard and the layout of the book help out to visualize the white out of the blizzard. I also have to give credit to Tim Townsend who inked the book. Basically this story arc has nothing to do with “One more Day” or “Brand New Day.” It is Peter Parker doing what he does best, trying to make the best of the worst possible situation and never giving up. As the old comic book writers would say “Enuff Said!”

What else should you be reading that you are not? Nova #12 is getting to the close of Annihilation: Conquest, which means the shit, is hitting the fan. The Nova series has been solidNova #12 since the beginning and it has dealt with most of the issues of the Marvel Universe. When Nova comes home to Earth after the first Annihilation mini series and has to deal with Iron Man and Civil War, the interaction with Iron Man and registration act is still one of my favorite moments of the post Civil War Era. (The #1 moment is when Thor gives Iron Man the beat down.) After the first Annihilation all Nova wanted to do is come home and relax and he is not home for more than two seconds and Iron Man tells him he has 48 hours to register. Nova is like I just saved the universe and also saw several worlds destroyed and billions and billions of people die, do you really think I care what you (Iron Man) and the government want me to do. That was a great issue, but like I said the series has improved since then. I have seen the character grow and mature.

The reason why I like Nova and this arc of Amazing is it is two characters not giving up. In real life more often than not lately we see people settling instead fighting to get to the next level. I especially hear it in kids, that something is too hard. I know they are just books but Spider-Man and Nova don’t have that choice of giving up. The Earth of the Universe is depending on them. Those two are going to die trying to save us. That is why I like the books because it has both characters at breaking points and it is what you do at that breaking that makes all the difference.

I think I got a little deep, I’m going to go read Sonic the Hedgehog……….

New Comics April 2, 2008

OK, Secret Invasion is here!! Let the questions and answers begin. Is Tony Stark a Skrull? Is Amazing Kick-Ass #2Spider-Man dumb? Tony Stark is not a Skrull and yes, Amazing is dumb. It would be too easy if Tony Stark was a Skrull, my bet is on Wolverine being a Skrull and that would be awesome. Plus this is how Marvel could explain that he is in every book. Nick Fury and his howling commandos are coming to the rescue and let’s see what chaos they bring with them.

Kick-Ass #2 and a 2nd printing of #1 come out this week. I think I already said how great this book was, but in case you missed it this book is remarkable. Mark Millar is the first writer in a long time that has me desperately waiting for the next issue. If you have read the first issue you know what I am talking about and if you haven’t you are missing out.  I have limited numbers of #2, so shoot me an email or call if you want one put on the side for you.

For all the Buffy fans you get a double dose this week with Angel After the Fall #6 and Buffy the Vampire Slayer #13. After the events of last issue of Buffy it will be interesting to see what she does this month. With post reviews of issue #12, fans were not too excited about her decision making.

Logan #2 hits the shelves this week also. In this three issue mini-series it will be interesting to see what Super Girl #28Brain K. Vaughn does. I liked the first issue, he developed three strong characters but not much happened. Issue #2 will definitely be the conflict issue and #3 will be the Wolverine kicking butt issue.
