Review: ‘Jem’ #20: Setting Up For More

THE STINGERS part 2! THE STINGERS have found themselves a label, but does that mean THE MISFITSs have lost theirs?! Meanwhile THE HOLOGRAMS struggle to find the missing piece to their band as SHANA finally heads to Milan. And STINGERS singer RIOT has his eyes locked on JEM… which means life got more complicated for JERRICA!

Writing

It seems more and more impossible to read comic books without knowing what is going on in the publishing company and what their plans on for the future. Case in point, Jem #20 is a fantastic issue on its own, but with the information the Misfits will soon have their own spin off series (which will hit shelves this December), you realize just how well thought out the story really is. By having the Misfits without a record label backing them, they are presented with the first problem writer Kelly Thompson will have them face in the new series. Very impressive bit of set up.

The rest of the story is full of things getting back to normal. Well, normal for Jem anyway. Pizzazz isn’t one to take what has happened laying down and immediately goes into revenge mode. Also, Riot is wasting no time in making a move to try and sweep Jem off her feet. The man moves fast but he may not be able to keep up with the craziness which comes from being around the Holograms.

Artwork

Despite the harsh criticisms which have been levied against the artist and her style, Jem still continues to be a very visually pleasing series. Artist Meredith McClaren’s characters are drawn silly when the moments need to be light and harsh and stylish when the tone needs to be more dramatic. The art has a great reaction and hopefully more individuals will come to appreciate it for just how impressive it is.

Conclusion

Another great issue. Still, it will be interesting to see where the storyline is going to go from here. With the Misfits getting their own book, will it mean they won’t be showing up in the main Jem series? Will Stormer and Kimber have to break up? The more questions which are asked, the more fans will eagerly wait for the next issue to come out.
