Review: Prophet #22 “You Throw like No Necks and Outsanders.”

Prophet_22CoverExcuse me while I ramble for a bit, but where the hell did this comic come from? Yes I know it’s a revived Liefeld comic from the 90’s but has it always been about weird sci-fi shit? I thought it was known for having an excessive amount of bullets and detail? People hyped the hell out of #21 and I dismissed like a fool because I’m not a fan of Liefeld properties in general and had too much on my plate. A buddy of mine forced this comic on me and I’m glad he did. It’s my favorite kinds of story: something new and totally unpredictable.

I have no idea what the fuck is going on but here’s what I’ve been able to figure out so far: After a long hibernation John Prophet is released from his underground life-pod to find himself on a distant future Earth. He is on a mission and makes his way across  this wasteland of techno-dessert and tribal insect aliens. He’s fought off mutant wolves, multi-mouth sheep-like creatures and even had sex with some weird alien thing. He uses this blue, glorpy gel thing as a disguise thing or something. Actually I’m not sure what he uses it for but it looks like blue jellyfish cape. Oh yeah, and the planet is thick with insectoid creatures. If the aliens from District 9 had a baby with Dark Crystal creatures they would look something like this. I think the main alien things are called Xiux-Guin. They have 4 eyes, 4 arms, and a mouth at the bottom of their long sinewy necks. Their hands have 3 fingers, and stand on their 4 legs like an awkward cockroach centaur.

In this issue John plods through a graveyard of dead robot giants and burned-out pods and comes across a Taxa caravan, a temporary oasis from the violent world. He finds employment shoveling Cikade which is basically giant alien shit that people use as building material in order to keep swarms of flying insects out. John makes a few enemies with some Xiux-Guin showing them up and throwing knives, even though he throws like “No Necks and Outsanders.” Later, Prophet commits a giant tribal faux-paux and that leads to all sorts of mayhem forcing him to flee from a horde of pissed-off cockroach centaurs. This leads him to discover a long lost human artifact that he can possibly use to escape. All sorts of hell breaks loose.

The story is a survivalist sci-fi mystery mixed with adventure and espionage and is told in a straight forward writing style that’s not overly descriptive but feels dream-like. Everything is alien and foreign to me. If Charles Burns, H.G. Wells and the guys that wrote Aeon-Flux sat down and collaborated on a story you might get something like this. It’s future primitive tale with only one human (so far) struggling against a planet hostile and strange creatures.

prophet-22-9I really love this kind of deep sci-fi, but can sometimes looks terrible (I’m looking at you Land of The Lost). Thankfully that is not the case here. Simon Roy illustrate this brutal future Earth beautifully. He uses a style that blends the best part of Geoff Darrow’s line work with Joe Kubert-like contour shading. My only slight knock against the art is the appendages of the aliens can look a bit clumsy at times.  The proportions seem a bit off and are longer than needed. Perhaps the creatures was designed appear more like tubes than limbs, it just wasn’t the best creative decision. I would have liked to see some tapering towards joints, or bulking up closer to the torso. Basically anything to give it some variation and not look so chunky. However it does appear consistent with the world as the dinosaur-sized  spider-elephants have a similar look. And I wouldn’t change a thing about those beasts! The coloring is close to what Chris Sotomayor did for Planet Hulk, but less on the Photoshop airbrush side of things. He has more of a watercolor approach akin to a printmaker coloring intaglio etchings. I also have to mention the lettering really quick. Ed Brisson uses a unique technique of putting the translation bubbles, straight over the xenomorph hieroglyphic text. It’s visually appealing and I immediately understood what was going on. Point for storytelling, point for originality and point for design.

Prophet really is a strange new world. This book has really grabbed me and I can’t wait to see more. There’s no comic on the shelf like this right now. Everything is unexpected and fresh, with bizarre twists and shocks lurking around every corner. Forget everything about the Liefeld series of the ’90’s. You don’t need any of the backstory to enjoy what is happening here. It’s the perfect place to jump on. Don’t sleep on this book!

Review : Animal Man #3 & Swamp Thing #3

Its Week one of the new month and that means its time again for me to review two of DC’s best titles of the relaunch , Animal Man and Swamp Thing. If you read my last  article on these two books you already know that they are both establishing a link between one another that involves bringing back Alan Moore’s concept of Totems  into the DC Universe proper. This is going to be huge for DC , even better writers Jeff Lemire and Scott Snyder have built up a fun rivalry trying to top one another with their respective books. Which I have the awesome opportunity to review . Lets get started shall we…

Swamp Thing #3

Written by: Scott Snyder

Art by: Yanick Paquette and Victor Ibanez

Review Score: 8 / 10

Scott Snyder eases us into this issue by showing us a boy by the name of William who is having trouble adjusting to his unique condition ,  he has a terminal allergy to Chlorophyll . It causes him to live out his young life in a bubble . His doctor tries to urge him to make friends and tells him how he caught all the fish on his wall. William is more concerned with the fact that those same dead fish are talking to him. Scott Snyder again is able to tell a strong story using both his amazing skill of dialogue and his ability to contrast that with something very dreadful in the background.

We are then taken back to the scene of our Cliffhanger from last issue. The lady in white has her gun pointed at Alec Holland and demands to see him use his powers to control the green. After his short display she then fills him in on why she saved hi to begin with . She has a history with the Other . She lets Alec know that Swamp Thing helped her get rid of the Others influence in her life and she needs him to become the big Green Guy to save little William.

Unfortunately for William and the three kids who came to terrorize him the Other gets to him first.  I couldn’t believe what I was seeing next, Scott Snyder definitely isn’t pulling punches and what happens to those three teenage kids and Doctor in the next few pages is nothing short of macabre. The whole book has a strong horror movie quality to it .  Yanick Paquette and Victor Ibanez alternate pages in this issue but it never feels jarring. They complement each other well enough to keep things cohesive. They each have a few pages to flex their muscles with just enough gore and violence in this issue to continue to make me squeamish page after page. Swamp Thing is a Mature book and one that takes chances with its art and story direction. This was another issue of setup and more of a slow burn to what should ultimately lead to an amazing next issue full of perfectly rendered moments of terror   excellent storytelling by Scott Snyder.

Animal Man #3

Written By: Jeff Lemire

Art By: Travel Foreman

Review Score: 9/10

Jeff Lemire’s Animal Man continues to shock and amaze me with how much he gets out of his characters and plot each issue. Buddy Baker and his daughter Maxine continue further into The Red and we finally get to meet the totems of the Red this issue. Right off the bat the amount of creativity and imagination on the page is astounding . The totems of the Red and visual look of the world created would make Benicio Del Toro jealous, in fact I bet  hes reading this comic in hopes of one day giving us an Animal man movie. Yes this book is that good only after a few pages . The Animal Men shed some light on the origin of Buddy’s powers and explain to him why Maxine is the most important piece to the puzzle this issue.

We also get to see Buddy’s wife and son back at home waiting for their family to return to them. Again, the quality of Jeff’s writing between siblings is pitch perfect . I truly care about this family and their well-being . Which is why the middle of this issue works so well. The Hunters Three from last issue are tracking the Baker Family to their home residence at the request of The Other . Two of the three head into The Red to go after Maxine and Buddy and the last Hunter decides to go after his wife and Son.  Buddy manages to tap into the true potential of his power as Animal man with mixed results and his wife and Son make a run from the Hunter only to unknowingly allow him back into their lives at the end of the issue . The art once again is great and well thought out . Travel Foreman renders some truly amazing visuals in the first half of the book and manages to capture each characters facial expressions with ease. There is a fairy tale like quality to his work that suits this book perfectly.  He continues to push the boundaries with his character designs . My only issue is that his backgrounds seem a little rushed this issue .

Animal Man continues to be a stand out title for DC’s New 52 . One that shows nothing but promise and creativity in its future. Everyone owes it to themselves to check out this book , it’s really that easy for me to recommend to you.

LB Comic Book Weekend recap

Lance Briggs Comic Book Weekend was a huge success!

We collected over 11,000 comic books and raised over $10,000. The comic books will now be sorted and sent to the CHA and the USO. All proceeds will go to fund Lance’s football camps for under privileged kids in Chicago.

This was the first time that the Comic Vault got swallowed up by a media storm. On a very cold and rainy day ESPN, FOX, CSN, Time Out Chicago, ESPN.com, Wired Image and Getty Image came down to get a piece of the magical moment. At the height of the event there was about 85 people in 750 square foot Comic Vault.

Vitamin Water, Walgreens, Bull & Bear and the Harlem Globetrotters sponsored the event. An hourly raffle keep the crowd entertained. On top of that we had four local creators promoting their comic books (Max Bare & Zoran Gvojic, Jim Terry, Dave Losso) Dave Losso had no voice and he let his art work speak for him.

Here is media round up from Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010.
