Spider-Men #3 An “Event Book” Done Right

Spider-Men #3

Story By: Brian Michael Bendis

Art By: Sara Pichelli

After an introductory issue that created the set up for 616 Peter Parker arriving in the Ultimate Universe  we finally learn that 616 Mysterio is behind everything. Issue 3 starts with Mysterio on the attack as his Avatar convince bot Peter and Miles that every Spider Villain has come t destroy them. Its a fun and intense battle that continues to show case both Spidermen extremely well. Brian Michael Bendis also continues to do a great job separating Miles and Peter from one another giving them their own voice as the fight everyone from Carnage to Miles Uncle this issue.

Peter has seen Mysterio do this type of thing before and distracts Mysterio long enough for Miles to put the hurt on Mysterio’s Avatar which backfires and knocks our 2 heroes out long enough for Mysterio to make his escape.

Sara Pichelli’s art continues to be one of the biggest selling points. She is just as important to the story. Giving both Miles and Peter their own signature moves. The action never feels choppy or out-of-place and it never once feels odd seeing Villains from Marvel’s 616 world next to their Ultimate counterparts. Their were several moments where I just stared at her pages in awe at the level of detail she packs into each panel. Sara’s always been able to draw a great action scene but its the closing pages that really surprised me. Pichelli captures emotion is such a great way that you cant help but match the same look she gives to Peter at the end of this issue.

Miles and Peter battle Mysterio in the earlier pages of Spidermen #3

Miles is woken up by The Ultimates after the fight but Peter is no where to be found. All of this leads up to the final pages I spoke of earlier. I must say that any Spidey fan is going to be shocked at the ending of this issue. I know I was legitimately saddened. I also cant wait to read the next issue to see how this all plays out for Peter.

Event books are a necessary evil in the comic world. I have to say I’m extremely impressed at the high level of quality being brought to this series. It does exactly what an event book is supposed to do. After reading this series I’m genuinely interested more now in both characters then i was prior to reading Spidermen. Also this Event Book seems to have implications that will last for both Peter and Miles in futures issues of their respective books. If you haven’t picked up this book yet give it a try its only five issues long and has done a great job so far convincing me that the Marvel world is big enough for two Spidermen.

Marvel Comics Friday afternoon released a three-page preview of Spider-Men #3 written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by Sara Pichelli. The problem with the preview is some of the panels are blackout till you read Spider-Men #2. No one wants spoilers but it seems like a have hearted effort by Marvel Comics. Also, the Comic Vault is waiting to review Spider-Men till something happens because the first issue is just a very long setup. Bendis is great at witty banter but could use some help with the pacing. With that said, Marvel loaded the press release with quotes from other comic book website and I feel like I read a different book.
The Comic Vault would like your opinion of what you thought of the first issue of Spider-Men #1.

“With well-judged pace and tone, it’s everything a Spider-Man fan could want.” – ComicBookResources.com

“A fine comic book that is spilling with the same charm that we get from Ultimate Comics Spider-Man each and every month.” – IGN.com

“…there isn’t a single panel that feels static.” – AintItCoolNews.com

“A purely enjoyable comic book, and three cheers if that continues through to the end.” – Comicsbeat.com

Tim Seeley talks about Witchblade #151

Witchblade #151 lands in your local comic book store this Wednesday and new writer Tim Seeley offered some insight into the new direction of the series.

Comic Vault: Why are you excited to be working on Witchblade?

Tim Seeley: It’s the single longest running FEMALE LEAD comic book on the stands! Not to mention that I read it as a teenager, so it has some of that nostalgia factor for me too. It also helps that the people at Top Cow are weirdly easy to work with.

Comic Vault: Why is Sara moving to Chicago?

Tim Seeley: There’s some very good in-story reason for it, but the real reason is that I really wanted to write a story set in Chicago. I’m pretty enamored with this city, and I really wanted an excuse to dig into its history, especially the dark and dirty stuff.

Comic Vault: What will make your run on Witchblade different?

Tim Seeley: I think we’re making Sara part of a completely new setting, and the city is as much character in the story as she is.

Comic vault: How specific in Chicago are you going to get? Will you use the neighborhoods or will Sara show up at “Drink and Draw?”

Tim Seeley: It’s VERY specific. To make the magic & monster aspects of WITCHBLADE really stand out, I thought the mundane should be really convincing. Sara’s office is the empty studio space above the Green Mill in Uptown, and so far every issue I’ve written has contained a lot of photo reference. We also refer to a lot of real events in Chicago history, which I hope will really give the comic a deeply rooted mythology.

Comic Vault: What is the difference between writing a male lead and a female lead?

Tim Seeley: I don’t think I approach it differently. The main thing I try to focus on is how others treat the character. Certainly the way people think and act are based on their individual views and ecpereinces, but the way others treat them is such a manifestation of society. Women have to deal with a lot of things that I don’t both positive and negative.

Comic Vault: How long is your run on Witchblade?

Tim Seeley: As long as I don’t mess it up.

Comic Vault: Why is this a good starting point for a new Chicago reader?

Tim Seeley: We really tried to focus on having this be as accessible, while making it have as many elements of what I think defines a WICTHBLADE story as possible. It’s spooky, sexy, action packed, and fun.
