This week Matthew Sardo talks about Amazing Spider-Man #700, “Dark Knight Rises,” Image Comics’ Debris #1, Marvel Comics’ Hit Girl #2, FF #20 and DC Comics’ Green Lantern #11. Sardo talks about politics and how mainstream comics need to take care of their customers.

Nerdy Netty review: The Amazing Spider Man

The Amazing Spider-Man is a third-person open world action/adventure video game, a tie-in to the film of the same name featuring the Marvel Comics superhero, Spider-Man. It was developed by Beenox, developer of Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and Spider-Man: Edge of Time, and published by Activision. The game was written and scripted by Seamus Kevin Fahey, of Battlestar Galactica fame, and serves as an epilogue to The Amazing Spider-Man film.

The game is set after the film, where new Oscorp executive Alistair Smythe (an expert in nano-technology), plans to create more cross-species experiments using the research of Dr. Curt Connors (aka The Lizard). But the cross-species experiments escape, causing havoc in Manhattan. To combat the cross-species, which Spider-Man is one of, Alistair Smythe develops a large group of robots but winds up causing more harm to the city than good. It’s now up to Spider-Man to save the city from both the cross-species experiments and robots. Spider-Man villains Rhino, Iguana, Felicia Hardy, Vermin and Scorpion are featured as the main antagonists of the game. The Lizard also has a role in the game. Developers also introduced a new piranha-like boss character created specifically for this game called Nattie.

AvsX – Just went Highlander on us!

Marvel Comics Monday afternoon released a teaser image for Act 3 of the Avengers vs. X-Men mega event. The image has the tag-line of “There can be only one!” The major problem with this is it is a complete rip-off from the “Highlander” franchise but maybe Disney bought that too! Well, we look forward to more original ideas coming from Marvel in the coming weeks.

Avengers Vs. X-Men – Act 3 Begins: THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE!

This August, the comic book event of the year – Avengers VS. X-Men – reaches critical mass as Earth’s Mightiest make their last stand against the Phoenix Force. But when the Phoenix Force yearns for a single host, who will it choose? There can only be one! Act Three kicks off in Avengers Vs. X-Men #9, hitting comic shops, the Marvel Comics app, and Marvel Digital Comic Shop this August.

Local Collective 44 FLOOD introduces its First Kickstarter Project TOME

Based out of Chicago 44FLOOD is a new concept created by Artists MENTON3 , Kasra Ghanbari, Ben Templesmith and Nicholas Idell owner of Alleycat Comics. Ive been fortunate enough to meet and engage all 4 of the members who make up the collective 44 FLOOD over the last year. Through my various meetings with them for the site I have had the opportunity to stop by their Art Studio and get know each member and feel fortunate enough to consider them a friend of mine.

Their first project they are rolling out on Kickstarter is called TOME. Below is the press release as well as info about the Project

TOME is an annual anthology in an oversized format showcasing world-class artists as they explore a single theme using the comic book, painting, and music mediums. And by oversized we’re talking big, around 11×17″ and 180 pages! That size will let you experience art and sequential storytelling in a way that would be almost impossible outside of standing in front of the original work itself.

This year’s TOME will focus on the theme of VAMPIRISM. Modern popular culture has shown us all kinds of depictions of vampires, from the silly to the subdued. The artists in TOME will each take 3-5 pages to explore what we think is a unique and relevant take on vampirism as a whole, including the misuse of power and the objectification and exploitation of others. And at the conclusion of each artist’s contribution, they’ll have a one-page interview conducted by another artist to continue their artistic exploration.

You can find out more information on their Kickstarter as well as another video about the project and additional footage of their limited print at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/44flood/tome-0

Review: Clint 2.1 (8.5/10) Now with even more Mark Millar

[nggallery id=71]

Issue: Clint 2.1
Writer:
Mark Waid and various others
Pencils: various
Publisher: Millar World
Release Date:
May 2012

CLiNT #2.1 highlights include:

Comic Strips:
– Supercrooks Chapter 1 by Mark Millar and Leinil Yu
– The Secret Service Chapter 1 by Mark Millar, Dave Gibbons and Matthew Vaughn
– Death Sentence Chapter 1 by MontyNero and Mike Dowling
– Rex Royd: Invasion Chapter 1 by Frankie Boyle and Mike Dowling

– Frankie Boyle and Mike Dowling introduce Rex Royd!
– 20 years of Lenore! Roman Dirge digs up the little dead girl!
– Who is Clint? An Investigation!
– Vern’s Badass Cinema 101!

Overall magazine rating 8.5 out 10

What worked for this magazine is all the comic strips. Mark Millar works with very talented creators and it shows in this issue. What separates Clint from any other magazine is that reading the issue is like sitting at the pub drinking a pint with Millar and friends. You can tell that they are trying to engage the reader and then encourage them to interact after reading, online with Facebook and Twitter.

What also works is the price of the magazine, it’s cheaper than some Marvel books. Four comics plus commentary for $6.99 is good bargain these days in a comic book shop. Also there are no advertisements in the book, you get pure Mark Millar and company and plenty of it.

What doesn’t work is the format. This could be a U.S. thing but reading comics in magazine form just doesn’t work. Also, what separates comics from magazines is that there is a chance that the book could be worth something in the future. This is happening a lot more, currently with Image books. If Clint was like Dark Horse Presents I think it would sell better and would not seem foreign. Plus, collectors would buy the issue looking for the next great character or story.

Clint #2.1 is a great change of pace read loaded with talent and great artwork!

Clint’s PR rep Ricky Claydon wanted me to add this piece about the book and subscription deal.

C2E2 – Before Watchmen Highlights And Notes – “Sex, Violence and Penises Galore!”

Brian Azzarello, Lee Bermejo, Amanda Conner, Adam Hughes, Len Wein, J. Michael Straczynski, Joe Kubert, Dan Didio, other DC crew including Bob Wayne, Mark Chiarello and Will Dennis sat down to have a chat about the Before Watchmen Prequels.

New Frontiersman teaser Headline: Punks destroy England, Are We Next?

Dan Dido was surprised there wasn’t more negative reaction for BeforeWatchmen. They were looking forward  to defending it.

J. Michael Straczynskiwas described Nite Owl as an origin story about how Dan became that character. Straczynski says, “The story will go from his early childhood through to his partnership with Rorschach and how that went badly.” The Alan Moore question was brought up immediately and J. Michael Straczynskiwas was quick to point out Moore’s hypocrisy. “He’s been using characters like the Invisible Man, Peter Pan, Jekyl and Hyde in what one fan basically called fan fiction — in ways their original creators probably wouldn’t have approved of.” He ended with, “Did Alan Moore get a crummy contract? Yes. So has everyone at this table. Worse was Segal and Shuster, worse was a lot of people.”

Joe Kubert came in late and the place went wild. Asked about working with his son Joe said, “Working with Andy was both a blessing and a little bit of a curse.” Kubert got a laugh. “Any variation of any line and you see creases lining his face!” Joe ended his talk with a warm sentiment and said it was a pleasure to work with his son. “How lucky can you get?”

When asked fs drawing Dr. Manhattan was Adam Hughe’s dream job he said,”I really wanted to draw Nite Owl.” Everyone laughed. Dan Didio suggested a death cage match between Adam Hughes and Joe Kubert. Adam continued,”It wasn’t a dream come true, but it is becoming really interesting.” Asked if whether there will be nudity on Dr. Manhattan  Adam Hughes replied, “Shit yes… If you have a good face day, you draw faces. If you have a bad face day, you draw trees.” The room snickered. “I took the Hemmingway approach and drank a lot. I treated it like experimenting in college.” Hughes explained that Watchmen was so shocking back when it was released because it was under the guise of a superhero comic, but he understands that times have changed. In closing, Adam talked about respecting the original tone of Watchmen in terms of profanity, raw truth and adult situations. Then quipped “Sex, violence & penises galore. Straczynski added to the Dr. Manhattan discussion that the plot is rather dark and about the quantum aspect of freewill.

Dan Didio said, “The Comedian is the first pages that made them say, ‘legal needs to see these’.” Brian Azzarello went on about the book, “Ozymandias is the spine of the story. Eddie’s the balls.”

Len Wein talked briefly about his Ozymandias series. “Exploring what made him want to almost end the world in order to save it was a lot of fun to work with.” He talked about Jae Lee’s art on it as if it was fine art.

Lee Berjmo on Rorschach, “We’re going to do a grind house movie. Lots of 70’s Porn shops. What better porn than 70s porn?”As the panelist discussion degenerated into more porn talk and Lee joked,”I was conceived in a porn shop.”

Brian Azzerello was asked about favoring the Comedian over Rorschach and he clarified his position, “I like the Comedian more as a person than Rorschach. I don’t prefer writing one over the other.” Expounding on this Brian said, “Rorschach is a blast because it’s so ugly. You people like that character? Well, you’re going to get it exactly the way you like it.” The room erupted in laughter.

Silk Sceptre will have a lot of easter eggs. Amanda Conner will put some personal moments into the story. Apparently an ex-boyfriend pastiche will pop-up as well. Amanda says it will be a, “romance comic with beatings. We are trying to keep a little bit of that tone, not make it too dark and angst-ridden.” Conner explained , “When I was a teenager, my mother and I had a contentious relationship, so I’m bringing that to the table a little bit. I’m just trying to remember all that stuff from when I was a teenager.”

Crimson Corsair is a backup feature that will be running across all prequels and the reflect the themes or the narratives in the same way Tale of the Black Freighter did in the original Watchmen.

At the end of the panel there was a question about the Silk Spectre Tijuana Bible in the “Watchmen” universe. “You might see it.” says Conner.

There was some new B&W interior work that was revealed as well as new covers for #2 issues.

“A COMIC SHOW” – 2.8.2012 (Tribute to TriForce Mike)

This week Aaron does the video solo in Triforce Mike’s memory. Aw hell, I’m gonna drop the third person. I miss this guy so much and really had to psyche myself up to do this. I haven’t read a comic since Mike got hit by a car and died last Monday. I realized today I’ve been paralyzed in that even though I was putting on a strong show because that’s what we had. We’ve been reading comics and talking about them every week for 8 years. I’m talking the ones we love and hate! I rarely ever talk about the books I dislike with customers because I don’t wanna poop on what they may like. When a book was really on fire like Animal Man Mike and I would get so pumped speculating where it was going. ..But again, I’m also realizing that “friendship is magic”, and there’s plenty of other people in my life that love me and would love to talk comics more often. So, I’m gonna start a new comic discussion club here, that will kinda be my support group for missing Mike. I’m gonna go home tonight a read a ton of comics! It’s what Mike would have wanted. – acomicshoptv
